Dalton-Whitfield County: Discovering Religion


Newcomers to Dalton and Whitfield County will inevitably notice the resounding chime of church bells on Sunday mornings. More than 130 churches call residents to worship each week.

Religion has always played a strong role in Dalton; it was no accident that Whitfield County was named for the Reverend George Whitfield.

The older churches with historic significance and newly constructed churches alike represent the broad spectrum of religions and creeds. The denominations include: Assembly of God, Baptist, Bethel Temple, Bible, Catholic, Christian, Church of God of Prophecy, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Community, Episcopal, Full Gospel, Holiness, Interdenominational, Islam, Jehovah's Witness, Jewish, Luthern, Methodist, Naverene, Nondenominational, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Salvation Army, Seventh-Day Adventist, and Orthodox.

Most places of worship in Dalton observe regular Saturday or Sunday worship. Wednesday night fellowship meetings are also popular with many congregations. Several churches provide nursery care for small children, as welll as instructions for all ages.

Religion is a common bond that brings many Daltonians together. It is an enriching influence for people who look forward to worshipping with family and friends each week.
